The Evolution of Art Deco Architecture in Montreal

Time: 12:00 p.m. NOON EST

In Montreal, In Montreal, as in many North American cities - New York, Miami, Washington, Los Angeles - Art Deco was the popular urban architectural style of the 1920s and 1930s.

When Sandra Cohen-Rose saw Art Deco buildings frequently neglected and forgotten, and ultimately demolished to make way for newer structures, she was stimulated to publish the first book on Canadian Art Deco, Northern Deco – Art Deco Architecture in Montreal.

Sandra’s presentation will acquaint you – as it has audiences in many cities, including New York, Melbourne, Cape Town – with many of Montreal’s most beloved Art Deco buildings, a number now demolished – Woodward’s, Krege’s, The York, and Snowdon Theatres.

Did you know how the magnificent Art Deco, 1931 Maison Cormier, the home of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, at the 11th hour escaped demolition, or the recent fate of The Crescent Building entrance lobby?

For discussion, bring your questions, and share your memories!
