Military Women Past, Present and Future

We're delighted to present an informative and enlightening session with Master Warrant Officer Stephanie Cyr, an Infantry Senior Noncommissioned Member in the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, based here in Montreal. MWO Cyr joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1998 and has been deployed around the world to many places, including Bosnia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Among her many achievements, MWO Cyr was the first woman to complete the Infantry Company Sergeant Major Course. Please join us to learn about her incredible experiences as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces! We will also be joined by Roberta Bolton- who will speak to the role military wives have taken in supporting service members.

MWO Stephanie Cyr, Infantry, Canadian Armed Forces
Master Warrant Officer Stephanie Cyr is an Infantry Senior Noncommissioned Member in the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, Montreal, Quebec. She joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1998.
She has multiple operational deployments, including as a machine gunner in Bosnia (2001), a security analyst with the United Nations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (2003), a Liaison-Observation Team leader in Bosnia (2004), as part of a Personal Recovery Team in Kabul, Afghanistan and Islamabad, Pakistan (2008) and as a Civil Military Cooperation Operator in Kandahar, Afghanistan (2010). During her last mission with Task Force Kandahar she assisted in transitioning the Canadian area of operations to US control.
Following her return from Afghanistan, WO Cyr served as an exchange NCO with the U.S. Marine Corps (2011-2014) at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Centre in Twentynine Palms, California. She was an instructor for the USMC Advisor Training Group, preparing USMC Advise Train Assist teams for operational deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. She also worked as a consultant on MISO and Foreign Affairs at the US Army’s Joint Rotational Training Centre and National Training Centre. Upon her return to Canada, WO Cyr spent a year as a Platoon Warrant at 5 Canadian Division Training Centre in Gagetown, New Brunswick, instructing the Canadian Army’s Primary Leadership Qualification (Land).
Throughout her career, MWO Cyr has had the opportunity to serve in both light and mechanized Infantry roles. She is a current Conduct after Capture Instructor and Personal Recovery Debriefer. She is an active Combat Tracker-Hunter and a skilled Small Arms instructor. She is the first woman to complete the Infantry Company Sergeant Major Course. In 2008, MWO Cyr was awarded a Commander Canadian Defence Academy Commendation for her work in establishing the Canadian Conduct after Capture capability. She was awarded the Chief of Defense Staff Commendation for her role Afghanistan in 2011.
MWO Cyr holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a certificate in Social Psychology, both from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec. She has earned her Masters in International Relations from Queens University, Kingston, Ontario.
MWO Cyr currently resides in Petawawa, Ontario with her husband Matthew. In her free time she is an avid world traveller, and an enjoyer of the arts and fine cuisine.

Roberta Bolton
Born and raised in the Eastern Townships, Roberta graduated from Bishops University with a B.Sc. and trained as a nurse at the Ottawa Civic Hospital before returning to Montreal. She spent almost 40 years as an ICU nurse at the Montreal General Hospital, retiring just seven years ago in 2013.
Roberta’s affiliation with the Black Watch began in 1982 when she met the then Pipe Major Bruce Bolton. Married in 1985 when he was a Captain, he moved up the ranks to become Commanding Officer and is now Honorary Colonel. Roberta will talk about her experiences as a military wife and as an active member of the Women's Division which acts to support morale within the regiment through various activities.
