URGENT CAVENDISH ROAD EXTENSION NEEDED FOR HOUSING
Published on September 04, 2024
Cavendish Road is divided by a railroad track, with the south side linked to the City of Cote-St-Luc, and the north side linked to the City of St. Laurent. For the past six decades, attempts to extend the Cavendish Road to develop housing and economic development projects were supposed to be concluded. Prior to 2017, the land occupied by the area of Namur-Hippodrome (Blue Bonnets) belonged to the provincial government. The land was sold for one dollar to the City of Montreal with the 2027 agreement that obliged the City of Montreal to proceed with the Cavendish Road Extension.
A Committee of citizens, councillors, and affected City Mayors, including Cote-St. Luc Councillor Dida Berku, St. Laurent borough Mayor Alan DeSousa, T.M.R. Mayor Peter Malouf and Cote-S-Luc Mayor Mitch Brownstein support the extension. Their backing is not only for housing and economic development but also to alleviate the current traffic congestion on the Decarie Expressway and surrounding neighbourhood streets.
However, the current Mayor of Montreal, Valerie Plante, does not favour extending the Cavendish Road. Instead, she supports a tramway and bicycle paths along Blvd. Jean-Talon Ouest. This deviation from the 2017 Agreement means that without the extension, the 20,000 housing units cannot be built with funds provided by the federal government.
On behalf of concerned citizens, MNA Elisabeth Prass has sponsored a petition to ask that the Quebec government require the city of Montreal to uphold the 2017 agreement upon the sale of Blue Bonnets, which stipulates that the extension of Cavendish Boulevard is necessary to develop the Blue Bonnets lands (Namur-Hippodrome neighbourhood).
To support this important initiative, we invite you to sign the petition and share it on your social media platforms and with your contacts. Sign the petition below and reply to confirm in an email that you will receive.
