Published on January 26, 2025

A remarkable piece of Montreal's women's history has found a new home. The Montreal Council of Women's (MCW) Centennial Tapestry is now proudly displayed at the Historic Fulford Residence.

A Legacy in Thread

Created in 1993 to mark MCW's 100th anniversary, this unique tapestry features contributions from 69 federated member organizations. Each piece incorporates historical logos through various textile techniques including embroidery, stenciling, painting, and quilting. The tapestry reflects Montreal's cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity, and the artwork beautifully captures Montreal's diverse community organizations spanning healthcare, education, arts, youth services, senior care, women's shelters, and more.

Journey Through Time (1993-2024)

The Historic Fulford Residence, now owned by Chez Doris, emerged as the ideal location. Both the MCW and Fulford Residence share over 130 years of history in supporting vulnerable women in Montreal. The tapestry's new placement celebrates this shared legacy of community service and women's advocacy.

This installation represents more than just artwork - it stands as a testament to Montreal's rich history of women's organizations and their ongoing commitment to community service.

The tapestry serves as a visual record of the many organizations that contributed to the development of services and programs for Montreal citizens during a century-long period. It stands as a testament to the collective effort and diverse nature of community service in Montreal, showcasing the city's rich social and cultural heritage.
