Budgetary Cuts & the Decline of Public Education

The impact of the Quebec government's educational policies underscores a decline in public education and the academic needs of our children. Members are encouraged to sign the following National Assembly petition to stop the $570 million in cuts in education. School boards, already facing staff and teacher shortages, will now need to confront the impact of reduced funding on the pedagogical consequences for their students. Health and psychological professionals will no longer assist students with special needs. The concern already expressed by parents, staff, teachers, and school administrators continues to be ignored. The legal challenges surrounding Bill 21, Bill 40 and Bill 96 further jeopardize access to public education for all Quebecers.

Teachers' working conditions are students' learning conditions. The proposed budgetary cuts will provide another incentive for more teachers to leave the teaching profession. Last year, 8,000 substitute teachers were required to cover home-room classes for absent teachers. In desperation, many substitute teachers lacked quality pedagogical backgrounds. In some cases, parents were used as substitutes for regular teachers. Doing nothing is complicitous. On Thursday, September 11, at 5:30 p.m., the MCW will host a special on-site event at the English Montreal School Board to address the decline of public education in its various forms. Please ensure that you register for the special September 11 gathering with educational councillors, teachers, and community leaders.
